Life on the run

16 May 2024

Sam Bosworth (13830) might have retired from rowing, but the former New Zealand coxswain is keeping busy.

Later this month he鈥檚 part of a four-strong team running 84km from London to Paris in just four days to raise money to support people with Parkinson鈥檚.

Sam was a coxswain in the New Zealand men's eight winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. He retired the following year, ending more than a decade of national rowing duty. His tenure included a handful of world junior medals and a history-making feat at the 2017 World Championships when he became the first male coxswain at international level to be picked for a female crew. He was subsequently part of the New Zealand women's eight that won bronze at the World Championships.

Now living in London, Sam works for construction consulting firm Equals Consulting as a Project Manager where he looks after a variety of commercial and residential jobs.

鈥淟ife after rowing is certainly different, particularly living in London, but I have loved the last few years out of rowing. I do miss it and sometimes reflect back on my career and think how lucky I was to compete on the world stage,鈥 Sam says.

鈥淩owing taught me a lot, which I try to bring to my day to day work environment. I am still involved in rowing at some capacity and enjoying watching my former teammates still competing on the world stage.鈥

No surprise that Sam will be heading to the Paris Olympics in late July to watch the rowing.

But his immediate goal is the fundraising run.

鈥淚t was our friend's idea. I was keen to run the race for a new challenge and for something else to focus on outside of work and social life. After it, I鈥檓 keen to continue running and sign up for a marathon,鈥 Sam says.

In preparation for the event, Sam and three other friends started a twice weekly run club last October.

鈥淭he (IRC) run club has quickly grown and we now have lots of friends joining us for weekly runs. We鈥檝e also been doing long runs on the weekends and exploring other parts of London.鈥

You can follow Sam and his teammates on their 84km race, each running an average of 21km a day, at .
